Well located in downtown Taipei. Room clean, spacious and well maintained. Both bath and shower in the bathroom. Fridge and kettle provided. Staff professional and helpful. Buffet breakfast offers the expected mix of local and international food, well presented and prepared. However the Howard is showing its age somewhat, and not quite achieving a 5-star standard. To give some examples out of quite a few observations: the internal decor is a decade out of date; mini-bar is not checked regularly; access to swimming pool is through a door marked “Staff Only”; no pod coffee machines which seem to be standard in 5-star hotels now; a cheese board should have a choice of crackers and at least one soft cheese; staff in the dinner buffet have been taught to hover, rather than wait for diners to finish - perhaps acceptable in a crowded breakfast setting, but less so in an evening dining setting in a less than full restaurant. This is not to denigrate staff who are unerringly polite and helpful, but just to illustrate that the Howard is not quite achieving its potential. This is perhaps reflected in the reasonable room rates.

I stayed there for 4 nights in March for a business. The hotel is well located. Nice area for walk nearby, there is a Taipei metro station nearby. The staff was super helpful and hospitable. They serve breakfast in two areas. Have nice restaurants inside with asian food.

Dated hotel with spotty service

So many before me had commented on this hotel's freeze in the 1980's - I won't elaborate on that. We are no spring chickens ourselves so we found some sort of nostalgic charm here. Hotel is minutes walk from two subway lines' stations. It's also close to Sogo department store. Hotel's gym is also frozen in time. Equipment did work though. Hotel's playroom: There's very little to play in there. My child went in for 10 minutes and declared he's finished. Check in: We stood in line for a long time (only 1 staff checking in guests while the other guy ignored the line and worked on the computer at the front desk) before we were told our check in was actually at the top floor lounge. Nowhere on the reservation confirmation sheet were we told of this arrangement. The other staff standing around could have told us as well. Rosewood Suite was big. There's a living room with sofas and a dining table for 4. Inside the bedroom there's a big bed which was 2 queen beds pushed together. Our child refused to sleep in the add on bed - it gets quite lonely (and scary for a child) outside in the living room. There's no space to add a bed in the bedroom. Which means he slept on the crevice. I had to ask the hotel to remove the add on bed because it was in the living room and was in the way of everything. Sadly the suite facilities did not match the upgrade. The closet was quite small and couldn't house the clothes of 2 adults 1 child. We had a banquet to attend so hangers went everywhere - seat backs, top of closets, etc plus we had to live out of our big suitcase. There was only 1 sink inside a not so big bathroom and the toilet (Japanese style with bidet) was not in a separate cubicle like other luxury hotels. Which was inconvenient for a family. Housekeeping : Quality was inconsistent. One day everything was perfect. One day dirty wash clothes were left in our room. One day bath gel bottle was left empty (I was very cross when I was forced to use shampoo as bath gel.) Toiletries were not replenished. Breakfast spread was quite big. The croissants were very good. Taiwanese fruits are always our favourite and there were plenty of that. However we suspect there were too many bugs who "visited" the uncovered fruits (many rude guests opened the covers and left them open) and we had diarrhea after breakfast. We thoroughly enjoyed happy hour in the executive lounge. There were several snacks and plenty of drinks. It'd be great if they would provide fresh milk for tea. Again, the plastic pods of cream do not resonate with "luxury hotel". My husband and I agree this following experience was quite weird. We travel quite often and it only happened here in this hotel to us. We were in the line in front of concierge and then this white guy came in from outside towards the concierge. The concierge rushed out from behind the counter and asked how he can help. The white guy was a bit taken aback and stammered through his request. Hmmm was I supposed to queue in the first place? Another occasion I called front desk to request for someone to get something. I spoke in mandarin. Hotel refused and said it's late and they're short staffed. Husband then asked me to call again because in the morning there's long line at front desk. This time I called and spoke English. Hotel sent someone right away. I am writing this not to criticize but hope the hotel will improve upon guests' comments.

Stayed here 3N in a twin room for an exhibition. Big is room, bathroom has all the amenities. Use of big toiletry bottles is good to reduce use of small plastic bottles. Toilet bowl is the Jap type with wash bidet. The single bed is comfortable for 1. But room design is really dated, like 20yrs back, but things work, to be fair. Staff are very friendly and helpful, doormen will help with hailing taxi, concierge is always avail to guide where MTR stations are... Big plus point is the ground floor bfast buffet, I love the natural light, high ceiling, so comfortable. Also very good spread, so we can try local cuisines like 卤肉，贡丸汤, and there are dim sum, pasta, pastries. Location wise, you can walk to subway, it's about 8-10min walk. Staff here v versed in English as I see many international guests compared another hotel I stayed in Taipei XiMenDing.

I stayed at Howard Plaza twice – one night before a tour and four nights after it. Both stays were fine, though rooms differed during both stays First night room was very fine, the rest of the stay was as many state here, a bit outdated, with stained carpet, though all on all the room was sufficiently clean. Breakfast was very fine, I especially enjoyed burdock salad and jelly fish salad. On the first night of arrival I was too tired to go for dinner and ordered beef noodle soup served to the room and it was best noodle soup I tried in Taiwan. Also, any service ordered – from laundry to the stay extension was performed very effectively with no fuss.
